Exploring Wellness: An Introduction

Exploring Wellness: An Introduction | LyndseyBudesa.com

What does wellness mean to you?

Have you thought about it? Like, really thought about it.

Is it nothing more than wanting to lose 10 pounds? If when you think about wellness, weight loss is all you think about, I want you to think about, why? Why do you want to lose this weight? Is it because your health depends on it? Maybe it's just about feeling comfortable in your own skin.

To some, wellness could be about finding the right diet. Not a diet that they stick to for a month, losing the weight they want to lose, and then going back to eating the way they always ate. But rather, going on a journey to discover a "food style" if you will, that they can use for the rest of their life. One that completely complements their, body, their constitution and their lifestyle that they want to live.

Maybe wellness is about clearing health up issues that have been plaguing you for what feels like forever. From less-than-perfect skin to hormonal imbalances, to a digestive system that does nothing but stink up the room; these are all things that affect you on a day-to-day basis and clearing them up and feeling like you are working with your body instead of your body working against you could be what wellness is to you.

Or is it deeper than that? Maybe it's about things that don't show up on the glossy health magazines.

Wellness could be about finding the perfect career that lights you up and makes you excited to jump out of bed everyday. Or it's about ending relationships that are doing nothing but hurting you physically, mentally or emotionally.

For some, wellness could mean finding joy in everyday. Connecting with themselves and others on a much deeper level. It could be about finding a spiritual side of themselves that they never connected with before.

To me, wellness is about all the above. It's about going on a journey, it's about exploring and discovering what makes me feel the best. What food nourishes my soul and gives me the nutrition I need to have a healthy body and mind. What movement excites me and keeps my body in shape that I want it to be in. Wellness to me is about only doing things that set my soul on fire. It's about connecting with myself. It's about living my best life.

Over the last few years I have been on this wellness journey. And I realized, that each and every day, I am exploring wellness. From when I started out, just dabbling in different forms of exercise, finding my love of yoga and finding the types of movement that best suited my body as I move through the different seasons of life. To exploring food; learning that, if I want my body to look a certain way, 80% of my focus should be on what I'm putting into my body. I'm still constantly discovering and learning and reevaluating how and what I eat and I don't think that will ever change. In the last year or two, wellness has become much bigger than just exercise and nutrition; the place where most start their wellness exploration. It has become about designing a lifestyle that brings me as much joy as I can possibly receive. Meditation and spirituality have become much bigger forces in my life, as a result. And really, it's just a whole lot of little things these days that are changing, because I'm thinking about things differently now. Priorities have changed. And I question everything.

So while yes, I want to be in shape and have clear skin, for obvious vanity reasons. And I want to be healthy so I can live a long, sickness-free life. I also want to get as much meaning and joy as I can out of every day. As cliché as it may sound, I want to live every day to the fullest.

That's what wellness is to me, that is my why and that's why I will always be exploring wellness.

So ask yourself, "where am I on my wellness exploration?"

If you're just starting out and you're thinking 'I have a whole lot to work on' my advice, is start with your diet! Try different styles of eating; paleo, dairy-free, gluten-free, pescitarian, vegetarian, vegan, whole foods, plant-focused. Once you figure out what you need to eat to feel your best move on to other aspects of wellness. Don't overwhelm yourself trying to do everything at once!
