Hello Beautiful! Over the past few years I have been on a "quest" of sorts to make my life as healthy as possible. When picturing a healthy life we default to thinking about eating whole, nutritious foods and exercising regularly. But we often forget about our skin and the many products we put it in contact with on the daily basis. Did you know, your skin is your largest organ and as women we put it through the ringer day after day? Sun exposure coupled with the onslaught of chemicals hiding in our makeup, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, hairspray, sun screen, and even cleaning products should have us running for the hills! These products are anything but natural.
They put what in my face cream??
Most products women use everyday contain toxic chemicals: carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors, which do nothing positive for our health. These ingredients have the potential wreak havoc on our bodies; they cause cancer, disrupt our endocrine system and cause reproductive issues, to name a few. Because the beauty industry is so unregulated, they can use any ingredient on the grounds of "innocent until proven guilty." Therefore, these ingredient are not heavily tested before they are put on the shelves of our local Sephora or CVS. They make us, the consumers, the guinea pigs and I, for one, am not OK with that! These are things we use everyday and they deserve just as much attention as we give to the quality of food we eat and making sure we get in our daily yoga practice or sweat session.
So do you have to toss your entire makeup drawer tonight? No!
Overtime make changes to clean up your beauty products. The approach I took, rather than throwing out every product I owned and spending a fortune to replace it all at once, was to make the switch to a better product as I ran out of it. So say you need a new foundation, take some time to research reputable makeup companies that use all natural or all organic ingredients. Buy when you need it. If you do this every time you run out of something, over the course of a year you will have replaced all the products you use most with something that is natural and good for you. Something you can be proud to put on your body everyday.
I know what you are thinking; "this sounds like a lot of work."
And you know what, you are right! It does take work, but it's absolutely worth it and I've found some great resources to help you along the way. And what lady doesn't like trying new products?
A great site I use all the time is EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. The database allows you to search for your favorite products and gives them a rating of 1-10; one being the safest and ten being nasty, please never use. Use the site to check your current products to see what needs to go and begin researching new products you want to switch to.
EWG also recently came out with its Healthy Living App, which allows you to scan a product's bar code and get its safety rating easily on your phone. This is SO SO SO convenient you are out shopping and want to make a quick decision. Just download and you are ready to go!
What are some products I Love?
I'm glad you asked! Here's a list of my favorite all natural products I am currently using to keep my skin, hair, body and home happy, healthy and chemical-free.
If I could only use one thing for the rest of my life I think it would be coconut oil! I have been able to throw out and stopped buying countless products that I have since replaced with coconut oil. I use it to cook with and as a part of my beauty regimen. I keep a jar in the shower and use it as 1.) a makeup remover and 2.) a full body moisturizer. To remove makeup, I just rub the oil on my face and then wipe off with a wash cloth (quick and simple). At the end of my shower I moisturizer my whole body with it. I hate putting lotion on and feeling sticky after a shower so this is a perfect solution!
Occasionally, I also use this miracle oil as a hair mask if my locks are feeling particularly dry.
- Take a big handful and work into your dry hair
- Tie it back into a bun
- Cover with a shower cap for about 20 mins minimum.
- Do laundry, clean the house, workout (whatever your heart desires) while you're waiting for time to be up and then take a shower and wash it all out. It may take 2 shampoos to get it all out but I promise your hair will feel super soft afterwards.
This is something I recently found and while it's not technically a beauty product its something I use everyday in my morning routine. Did you know that magnesium is the number one mineral most people are deficient in?! Many people take pill supplements, but magnesium is most easily absorbed in liquid form, through the skin. I use a couple of sprays daily on my legs and arms or anywhere I am feeling sore. Magnesium helps relax muscles and soothe sore muscles after a tough workout and can help you sleep more soundly. If you've ever gotten that restless leg feeling that keeps you up at night, try this, it helped me sleep better, almost immediately!
These babies are one of the newest editions to my daily rotation. I have been building a collection over the last few months and I am constantly finding new ways to use them. So how do I incorporate them into my beauty routine?
I use Tea Tree oil for spot treatment, various blends as perfume like Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint, I add oils to my baths and showers such as Eucalyptus and diffuse Lavender and Cedarwood at night to help me sleep peacefully. I also incorporate EO's into my cleaning products, making my own all-purpose, window, rug, and bathtub cleaners. Doing this cuts out more chemicals the average person frequently comes in contact with. I have a lot of recipes saved I still can't wait to try like body butter, salt scrub and face toner. The options are really endless and it's so fun trying different combos and experimenting!
I use Young Living Oils and cannot recommend them enough! Feel free to reach out if you have questions or want to purchase a start pack I'd be happy to help!
RMS Beauty products are a makeup bag must-have if you ask me! Master Mixer is a rose gold creamy pot of goodness, which is said to compliment every skin tone. I use this as my everyday eyeshadow, and cheek highlighter. It's coconut oil based, so obviously I love it! It gives you that dewy natural glow without the sticky feeling. "Un" Cover-Up is their concealer, which is meant to uncover healthy skin rather than just covering up. It is meant to heal not just hide! I use this sparingly under my eyes or on a blemish when needed. It's a great product that actually helps and nurtures your skin.
And there you have it!
When it comes to our beauty routine less is really more! There is beauty in simplicity.
Do you have a favorite natural product you want to share?! I'd love to hear about it!
